هنر و خوانندگی برای محمدرضا شجریان در اولویت اصلی قرار داشت. این موضوع را دوستان او به خوبی میدانند. شجریان از همان شروع خوانندگی برای ارتقای هنرش، نزد استادان بزرگی رفت، سختیهای مسیر را به جان خرید و تلاش کرد هنرش هیچگاه رنگ و بوی ابتذال به خود نگیرد.

بخشی از این کتاب به نگاهِ شجریان به فضای هنری آن روزگار معطوف است. کتاب در چندین بخش در خلال مصاحبه و گزارش، توضیح میدهد که شجریان برخلاف بسیاری از خوانندگان زمان خودش هیچگاه تن به خواندن در کاباره و ابتذال نداد و همواره با جدیت مقابل این جریان ایستاد.
مقاومت شجریان در برابر پول کابارهها
کتاب توضیح میدهد که در سالهای میانی دهه ۱۳۵۰ برای اجرای یک برنامه گلها از رادیو، دستمزدی برابر با ۷۵۰ تومان به شجریان پرداخت میشد. شجریان این موضوع را چنین توضیح میدهد: «برای هر جلسه، حقالزحمهای میگرفتم که در آغاز کار در رادیو جلسهای ۲۰۰ تومان بود و در اواخر آن – حدود سال ۱۳۵۵- به جلسهای ۷۵۰ تومان رسیده بود، بین دو تا شش برنامه هم در ماه اجرا میکردم، بههرحال چیزی که به دستم میرسید، یک کمک خرجی بیش نبود و در اصل کارشناس رسمی وزارت کشاورزی بودم.»
در مقابل این رقم، آن زمان دستمزد یک شب اجرا در کاباره، به چند هزار و گاه چند ده هزار تومان میرسید. شجریان در جایی با تاکید بر اخلاقیات در این باره گفته بود: «آنچه همیشه برای من مطرح بوده و هست، این است که در جایی شرکت کنم که موسیقی در متن باشد و نه در حاشیه. من هیچ وقت نتوانستهام به خاطر سرگرمی یک عده به جایی بروم و برنامه اجرا کنم، چون این کار با روحیه من جور نبوده است.»
در آن زمان تعداد زیادی از هنرمندان موسیقی کلاسیک ایرانی برای درآمد بیشتر به اجرا در کاباره و موسیقی فیلم رو میآوردند ولی شجریان هیچگاه تن به چنین فضایی نداد. به همین خاطر روزنامه کیهانِ آن زمان شجریان را با چهار تا شش هزار تومان درآمد و ساکن در یک خانه اجارهای، هنرمندی خواند که باید سرمشق بسیاری از هنرمندان صاحب مال باشد.
نقدهایی تند به خوانندگان کابارهای
شجریان در طول دهه ۵۰، در خلال چندین گفتوگو نقدهایی را به خوانندگان کابارهای وارد میکند و به شکلی مستقیم هنرشان را زیر سوال میبرد. او در گفتوگویی در سال ۱۳۵۴ با خبرنگار روزنامه کیهان درباره خوانندگان کابارهای چنین میگوید: «مروری در ۲۴ ساعت زندگی یک هنرمند کابارهای، خود نشان میدهد که چگونه چنین هنرمندی در طول زندگی خود، سیر قهقهرایی میپیماید. هنرمند کابارهای معمولا هفت یا هشت بعدازظهر، از خانه خود خارج میشود و تا ساعت سه تا شش بامداد، در کابارهها و شبنشینیهای خصوصی برنامه اجرا میکند. بامداد غرق خواب به خانه برمیگردد، تا ساعاتی از بعدازظهر میخوابد، بیدار میشود، استحمام و آرایش میکند و دوباره به کاباره میرود. بدینگونه در ۲۴ ساعت حتی یک ساعت فرصت تمرین کردن و در مکتب استاد نشستن ندارد. پس نه تنها چیزی نمیآموزد، بلکه آموزههای نخستین خود را نیز به تدریج فراموش میکند. در این حالت برای او دیگر هنر یک علم ممتاز نیست، چیزی است مثل یک کشتی باری که میتوان با محموله آن تجارت کرد.»
شجریان در گفتوگوی دیگری با مجله جوانان امروز، در پاسخ به سوالی درباره گوشهگیری خودش میگوید: «من خیلی هم گوشهگیر نیستم. بلکه از مهمانیهای شبانه به دور هستم، چون در اغلب این محافلِ به اصطلاح هنرمندانه، بیشتر دروغ و خودنمایی حکمفرماست در حالیکه من عاشق سادگی و حقیقت هستم و دلم میخواهد همیشه نیز در این قالب باقی بمانم.»
نگرانی بابت موسیقی ایرانی
درک موضع شجریان نسبت به کابارهها زمانی روشنتر میشود که فضای موسیقی ایران در دهه ۱۳۵۰ را در نظر بگیریم. در آن سالها، موسیقی ایرانی در دو مسیر متفاوت حرکت میکرد. از یک سو برنامههایی چون «گلها» در رادیو که بر آموزش، حفظ سنت و ارتقای موسیقی دستگاهی تأکید داشتند و از سوی دیگر بازار پررونق کابارهها که درآمدهای کلان و شهرت سریع را برای خوانندگان به همراه میآورد. بسیاری از هنرمندان میان این دو مسیر در رفتوآمد بودند، اما شجریان آگاهانه راه دشوارتر را انتخاب کرد.
او بارها تأکید میکرد که آواز ایرانی پیش از آنکه وسیلهای برای کسب درآمد باشد، هنری مبتنی بر دانش، تمرین و شاگردی است. به همین دلیل نزد استادانی چون نورعلی برومند، عبدالله دوامی و اسماعیل مهرتاش سالها به آموختن پرداخت و معتقد بود خوانندهای که از فضای آموزش و تمرین دور شود، بهتدریج سرمایه اصلی خود یعنی توانایی هنری را از دست خواهد داد.
از این منظر، موضعگیریهای تند شجریان علیه فضای کاباره را نباید فقط یک داوری اخلاقی دانست چرا که او نگران بود که موسیقی اصیل ایرانی به کالایی صرف برای سرگرمی تبدیل شود و پیوند خود را با ادبیات، عرفان و سنت آموزشیاش از دست بدهد. همین نگاه بعدها نیز در فعالیتهای او ادامه یافت. چه در همکاری با گروههای موسیقی سنتی و چه در انتخاب اشعاری از حافظ، سعدی و مولانا که همواره بخش جداییناپذیر آثارش بودند.
شاید به همین دلیل است که مرور گفتوگوهای شجریان در دهه ۱۳۵۰، تصویری متفاوت از او ارائه میدهد. هنرمندی که پیش از تبدیل شدن به «خسرو آواز ایران»، پروژهای مشخص برای زندگی و هنر خود تعریف کرده بود و حاضر نبود آن را با درآمد بیشتر یا شهرت زودگذر معاوضه کند.
سبک زندگی سالم شجریان
خودمراقبتی شجریان فقط به فضای هنریاش معطوف نبود. او در زندگی شخصیاش نیز مراقبتهای لازم را از خودش داشت. شجریان در گفتوگویی با تاکید بر زندگی سالم و دوری از سیگار و مشروب، سبک زندگی خودش را چنین توضیح میدهد: «مطلقا سیگار نمیکشم، حتی همنشینی و همسفر بودن با آدم سیگاری آزارم میدهد، با هیچ نوع دودی انس و الفت ندارم، ضمن اینکه گریزانم و بسیاری از دوستانم را که اهل دود و دَم بودند، واداشتم که از خیر دود بگذرند. مشروب نمیخورم، شبانهروزی هشت ساعت میخوابم، جمعهها کوهپیمایی میکنم، برای نفس و آمادگی حنجره فقط تمرین صدا میکنم. غیر روزهای تعطیل، نوارهای اساتیدم را گوش میدهم که در ذهنم تکرار شوند… گوشت و چربی کمتر میخورم و به میوه و سبزی میپردازم، چون پرهیز از خوردن گوشت حیوانات، روحانیتی هم در من ایجاد میکند که برایم لذتبخش است. به «حافظ» به خاطر علو طبعش عشق میورزم، با شعر اوست که انسان به آسمانها عروج میکند. اگر شعر خوب در اختیارم نباشد، هیچگاه نمیتوانم آواز خوب بخوانم و انتخاب حافظ بدان جهت است که هنر هنرمند زرگری، یک نوع گوهر را تراش و صیقل میدهد. شعر حافظ هم برای من یک گوهر است.»
شجریان همچنین با نام بردن از خوانندگان مورد علاقهاش مثل بنان، تاج اصفهانی، ادیب خوانساری، قمر، فاختهای، طاهرزاده، ظلی و اقبالالسلطان، شیوه خوانندگی محمد نوری را مورد ستایش قرار میدهد و میگوید: «وقتی محمد نوری میخواند، من تا آخر وقت به دقت گوش میدهم، چون به خوبی روشن است که نوری، استاد دیده، خوب میداند از صدایش چطور بهره بگیرد و اجرای عالی و چشمگیری دارد. البته من به همه جوانها نمیگویم بروند سبک نوری را دنبال کنند، بلکه معتقدم مثل نوری در سبک خودشان تجربه بیندوزند، علم آن موسیقی را فراگیرند و در ضمن سعی نمایند موسیقی جاز را به موسیقی اصیل و ملی ایرانی بچسبانند.»
