اما در این خانه، شخصیت اصلی با رقیبی روبهرو است که مرده است. زنی به نام ربهکا دووینتر که هرگز در داستان حضور فیزیکی ندارد اما سایهاش بر تمام شخصیتها و وقایع سنگینی میکند.
همین ایده مرکزی، یعنی حضور پررنگ یک غایب، یکی از مهمترین دلایل موفقیت رمان بود. دوموریه با خلق فضایی سرشار از اضطراب، حسادت، ناامنی و هویت ازدسترفته، اثری نوشت که میان رمان عاشقانه، داستان معمایی و ادبیات گوتیک حرکت میکرد. بسیاری از منتقدان معتقدند راز ماندگاری «ربهکا» در پرداختن به بحران هویت راوی است. زنی که احساس میکند هرگز نمیتواند با تصویر افسانهای همسر پیشین شوهرش رقابت کند.
فیلمی موفق برای هیچکاک
در سال ۱۹۳۹، هیچکاک به دعوت تهیهکننده قدرتمند هالیوود دیوید سلزنیک به آمریکا رفت. سلزنیک که پیشتر با فیلم «بر باد رفته» موفقیتی تاریخی کسب کرده بود، به دنبال پروژهای بزرگ برای همکاری با هیچکاک بود. «ربهکا» انتخابی ایدهآل به نظر میرسید چرا که در فهرست پرفروشترین کتابهای زمان قرار داشت و مخاطبان گستردهای در آمریکا و اروپا پیدا کرده بود. همچنین عناصر تعلیق و رازآلودگی آن با جهان سینمایی هیچکاک همخوانی داشت و داستان از شخصیتهای پیچیده و فضایی پرتنش برخوردار بود.
در واقع هیچکاک در «ربهکا» چیزی را میدید که بعدها به امضای شخصی او تبدیل شد، ترسهای پنهان، روان آشفته شخصیتها و رازهایی که زندگی روزمره را به کابوس بدل میکنند. با این حال خیلیها فیلم را بیشتر متعلق به سلزنیک میدانستند تا هیچکاک. با وجود موفقیت فیلم، بسیاری از پژوهشگران سینما معتقدند «ربهکا» یکی از کمترین آثار هیچکاک از نظر میزان کنترل هنری اوست.
سلزنیک اصرار داشت که فیلم تا حد امکان به رمان وفادار بماند و بارها در روند تولید در تصمیمهای خلاقانه دخالت کرد. به همین دلیل برخی منتقدان «ربهکا» را نه یک فیلم کاملاً هیچکاکی، بلکه اثری میدانند که میان دو نگاه متفاوت گرفتار شده است. نگاه ادبی و وفادار سلزنیک و نگاه سینمایی و شخصی هیچکاک.
«ربهکا» موفقترین شکست هیچکاک در اقتباس ادبی
با این حال، هیچکاک توانست برخی از مهمترین عناصر خود را مثل استفاده از فضاهای معماری برای ایجاد اضطراب، تأکید بر روان شخصیت اصلی، نمایش ترس و ناامنی از طریق میزانسن و نورپردازی و خلق تعلیق به جای تکیه صرف بر معما وارد فیلم کند.
حال اصلی اینجاست که فیلم هیچکاک را باید اقتباسی موفق بدانیم یا نه؟ پاسخ به این پرسش بستگی دارد که از چه زاویهای به اثر نگاه کنیم. اگر معیار موفقیت، دستاوردهای سینمایی باشد، «ربهکا» بیتردید اقتباسی موفق است. فیلم نامزد ۱۱ جایزه اسکار شد و دو اسکار مهم، از جمله بهترین فیلم، را به دست آورد. بسیاری از منتقدان نیز آن را از آثار مهم دوران کلاسیک هالیوود میدانند. اما اگر معیار، انتقال روح رمان باشد، ماجرا پیچیدهتر میشود.
انتقادات طرفداران کتاب
بزرگترین انتقاد طرفداران کتاب این است که فیلم نتوانست جهان درونی راوی را به اندازه رمان بازسازی کند. در رمان، خواننده مدام در ذهن شخصیت اصلی حضور دارد و احساس ناامنی، حسادت و فروپاشی تدریجی او را تجربه میکند. بخش عمدهای از قدرت کتاب از همین مونولوگهای درونی ناشی میشود.
فیلم ناچار بود این لایههای ذهنی را به تصویر تبدیل کند و در نتیجه بخشی از ظرافت روانشناختی اثر از بین رفت. یکی از مهمترین اختلافها میان کتاب و فیلم به سرنوشت ربهکا مربوط میشود. در رمان، ماکسیم عمداً همسرش را میکشد. اما قوانین سختگیرانه هالیوود در آن دوران اجازه نمیداد یک قاتل بدون مجازات اخلاقی به تصویر کشیده شود. به همین دلیل فیلم ماجرا را تغییر میدهد و مرگ ربهکا بیشتر به یک حادثه یا اتفاق ناخواسته شبیه میشود.
این تغییر به نظر بسیاری از خوانندگان کتاب، قلب تراژیک داستان را تضعیف کرده است. در رمان، ماکسیم شخصیتی خاکستری و اخلاقاً پیچیده است اما در فیلم تا حد زیادی به شخصیتی قابلهمدردی تبدیل میشود.
«ربهکا» موفقترین شکست هیچکاک در اقتباس ادبی
نکته جالب آن است که یکی از بزرگترین موفقیتهای فیلم نیز همان چیزی است که در کتاب وجود داشت یعنی غیبت ربهکا. هیچکاک هرگز چهره ربهکا را نشان نمیدهد و اجازه میدهد او به یک شبح ذهنی تبدیل شود. این تصمیم باعث شد شخصیت ربهکا همچنان حضوری قدرتمند و وهمآلود داشته باشد.
اما طرفداران رمان معتقدند کتاب در خلق این شبح روانی بسیار موفقتر عمل میکند، زیرا خواننده مدام از خلال خاطرات و روایتهای دیگران تصویری متناقض و چندلایه از ربهکا میسازد. در کل «ربهکا» بیش از آنکه داستانی درباره یک قتل یا یک راز باشد، رمانی درباره هویت، اضطراب زنانه، حس مقایسه شدن و سلطه گذشته بر حال است. این مفاهیم در قالب زبان و روایت ادبی شکل گرفتهاند و انتقال کامل آنها به سینما کار آسانی نیست.
فیلم هیچکاک توانست تعلیق، فضای گوتیک و شکوه بصری رمان را حفظ کند، اما نتوانست به همان اندازه وارد ذهن شخصیت اصلی شود. به همین دلیل بسیاری از خوانندگان کتاب معتقدند فیلم، هرچند اثری ارزشمند و کلاسیک است، تنها بخشی از تجربه «ربهکا» را منتقل میکند. امروز، بیش از ۸۰ سال پس از انتشار رمان و ساخت فیلم، «ربهکا» همچنان یکی از مهمترین نمونههای اقتباس ادبی در تاریخ سینما محسوب میشود. فیلم هیچکاک در تاریخ سینما جایگاهی تثبیتشده دارد و رمان دافنه دوموریه همچنان میلیونها خواننده جدید پیدا میکند.
