١۵ آذر بیستمین سال خاموشی علی حاتمی، سعدی سینمای ایران، بود. او که همچنان در زمره فیلمسازان تأثیرگذار سینمای ایران قرار میگیرد، آثار شاخصی از خود برجای گذاشت همچون «سوتهدلان» (١٣۵۶)، »حاجیواشنگتن» (١٣۶١)، «مادر» (١٣۶٨)، «دلشدگان» (١٣٧٠) و همینطور دو سریال استثنایی «سلطان صاحبقران» و «هزاردستان» که هنوز هم میتوان در آنها تازگی نگاه و جامعهشناسی مردم ایران را مشاهده کرد. دلبستگی او به تاریخ بهخصوص به دوره ناصرالدینشاه قاجار و البته روایت و برداشت او از تاریخ و درعینحال خوشآبورنگی قابهای فیلمهایش برخلاف واقعیات روز جامعه ایران، در زمان حیاتش همواره مورد انتقاد منتقدان قرار میگرفت یا یکی از فیلمهای بیبدیلش، «حاجیواشنگتن»، سالهای سال در محاق توقیف بود، اما امروز که سالها از زمان ساخت فیلمهایش گذشته، تازه عیار آنها معلوم شده است؛ بهطوریکه برخی از فیلمسازان راه او را به شیوه خود ادامه میدهند همچون حسن فتحی. او یکی از بهترین گفتارنویسان ادبیات نمایشی ایران بود. تسلط حاتمی بر ادبیات عامه و مردم ِکوچه و بازار و از سویی دلبستگی و شناختش به ادبیات و شعر کلاسیک ایران و پیوندشان با نقاشیهای دوره قاجار و مکتب نقاشی قهوهخانه و همینطور تسلطش بر نمایشنامهنویسی، به فرم ادبیات نمایشی و تصویری ایران غنا بخشید. هرچند که آثار هیچ فیلمسازی عاری از نقد نیست، به آثار حاتمی هم نقد وجود دارد مثل علاقه گاه افراطیاش به واقعیت که گاه به هایپررئالیسم تنه میزد و تازه در اصل واقعیبودنش هم تردید بود! اما بااینحال، واقعیت این است که هرکسی نمیتواند «علی حاتمی» شود. هرچند که همیشه جاپایش در دل سنتها و گذشته ایران سفت شده بود، اما نقدهایش هم به آنها دیدنی و شنیدنیتر است. شاهد مثالش فیلم «حاجیواشنگتن» بود که حاجحسینقلیخان نوری (عزتالله انتظامی) از سوی ناصرالدینشاه بهعنوان سفیر ایران به آمریکا اعزام میشود. سفیر ایران در آمریکا هیچ مراجعهکنندهای ندارد، به دلیل کمبود بودجه و ولخرجیهای شاه در تهران، این سفیر بختبرگشته که از قضا سنتی نیز هست، ناچار میشود در ینگهدنیا خدم و حشم را مرخص کند و با مشتی بیدین و زباننفهم روزگار بهسر کند و دستآخر کلاه گشادی بر سرش میگذارند و طوق بدبختی بر گردنش مینهند! اما حیف این فیلم بعد از مرگ علی حاتمی اجازه نمایش پیدا کرد و این است حکایت نوشدارو بعد از مرگ سهراب!
عزتالله انتظامی که بازیای درخشان و ستودنی در این فیلم داشت، این روزها در منزل با بیماری خود سر میکند. از لابهلای صدای نالان و نفسهای بریدهاش وقتی نام علی حاتمی را میشنود، لختی مکث میکند و زیر لب زمزمهکنان میگوید: «حیف…. صد حیف… علی را زود از دست دادیم… علی بزرگ بود… علی رفیق بود… . چقدر خاطرات خوبی با او دارم… . خیلی دلتنگ علی هستم…». مدتی بعد سکوتی طولانی میان ما حاکم میشود. وقتی به او میگویم که امروز ٢٠ سال از مرگ علی حاتمی گذشته، وسط صحبتهایم نیم نگاهی به من میکند و بعد سرش را به زیر میاندازد: «چقدر زمان زود میگذره!… چقدر زود دیر میشه… . اگر دست قضا اجازه میداد، ادبیات نمایشی ما خیلی بیشتر از اینها میتوانست از علی بیاموزد… حیف». دیگر نمیتواند به حرفزدن ادامه دهد. قطره اشکی از چشمانش سرازیر میشود و با خود میگوید: «علی خدا تو را رحمت کند…». علی حاتمی ۱۵ آذر ۱۳۷۵ به دلیل ابتلا به بیماری سرطان درگذشت. در مراسم ختم او در مسجد الغدیر تهران مردم زیادی آمده بودند، بهطوریکه مسجد سهبار خالی و پر شد تا فقط مراجعهکنندگان لختی فاتحهای بخوانند و بروند. خیلیها درباره او گفتند و نوشتند…، اما به نظر میرسد که او همچنان زنده است. پیکر علی حاتمی در قطعه هنرمندان بهشت زهرا(س) به خاک سپرده شد. بر روی سنگ مزار او یکی از ماندگارترین دیالوگهای فیلم «حاجیواشنگتن» نقش بسته: «آیین چراغ خاموشی نیست».
